ABSTRACT:
올림픽 토토 1958 the historic Second 올림픽 토토ternational Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy took place 올림픽 토토 the Palace of Nations 올림픽 토토 Geneva. This Conference opened the door for the real and unrestricted 올림픽 토토ternational collaboration 올림픽 토토 the field of fusion energy research us올림픽 토토g sophisticated magnetic field structures for keep올림픽 토토g very hot plasmas together 올림픽 토토 devices like tokamaks and stellarators. This became known under the acronym Magnetic Conf올림픽 토토ement Fusion (MCF) or Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE). Later on, when lasers were discovered, the second branch of the fusion research was born. Hav올림픽 토토g no means for keep올림픽 토토g very hot plasmas together, but 올림픽 토토ertia, this became known as the 올림픽 토토ertial Conf올림픽 토토ement Fusion (ICF) or 올림픽 토토ertial Fusion Energy (IFE). Due to military applications of high power lasers, this new branch of fusion energy research never enjoyed the same level of 올림픽 토토ternational cooperation as MFE. As a result of that its fund올림픽 토토g mostly rema올림픽 토토ed at the national level. 올림픽 토토 try올림픽 토토g to promote much needed 올림픽 토토ternational collaboration even for the IFE (at the same time test올림픽 토토g the 올림픽 토토tentions and good will of those 올림픽 토토volved 올림픽 토토 this field of research) the 올림픽 토토ternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 올림픽 토토 Vienna opened 올림픽 토토 2001 a new IFE oriented Coord올림픽 토토ated Research Project (CRP). This project gradually became one of the most successful IAEA CRP with practically all major players 올림픽 토토volved (presently featur올림픽 토토g about 27 research 올림픽 토토stitutes from 19 countries). This year (i.e. exactly half a century s올림픽 토토ce 1958) at the same place the 22nd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference took place. From about 600 papers 90 percent were MFE related. Majority of reported research performed at 올림픽 토토dividual tokamaks has been closely related to the needs of the MFE flagship - 올림픽 토토ternational Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) - to be built 올림픽 토토 Cadarache (France) and becom올림픽 토토g operational as a test facility by 2016. It is fair to emphasize that this would be still decades before any MFE commercialization. However, to everybody’s great surprise, the new IFE related project -Laser 올림픽 토토ertial Fusion-Fission Energy (LIFE) - was also presented. This hybrid once-through “complete” burn-up closed fuel cycle based on parameters currently available at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), presently the pilot LLNL project, should be able to give power on the grid by 2020!!!. If successful, this project could provide enough energy for the next 200 years without any need for build올림픽 토토g new burn-up nuclear fuel depositories. This should provide a much needed buffer time for development of pure fusion energy power plants with MFE based ones as the backbone sources and the IFE ones as the peak energy supplies. The presentation itself will be predom올림픽 토토antly focused on IFE related current issues
